Cook County News Herald

Why are we educating students from Lake County?

I waited for my recent copy of the News-Herald to see what the response would be to the article about township monies to Birch Grove. I was stunned to not see one letter questioning their representatives’ decision to circumvent the law by coming up with a statute that fits their agenda. Really!

I have to say I have never been a supporter of our tax dollars supporting Birch Grove when we have a public school system that needs our money. I felt defeated but at least the students we were educating were from Cook County not Lake County. I could not believe what I was reading, more than two-thirds of students attending Birch Grove are from Lake County. What is happening in Cook County? Will we soon be paying for St. Louis County or Canadian students?

I realize I no longer live in Cook County, but I do still own property and I have family and friends there. I made a call to Braidy Powers to just verify that if Lutsen or the county elects to give monies to Birch Grove it will include some of my property taxes. I write this letter because I have no vote and this is taxation without representation. This is my only voice and I will not be silenced. If the supporters of Birch Grove want a school that embraces those from where ever then please do it on your dime not mine!
