Who needs Iron Chef?

The competition is friendly and the chili is delicious. Jeff and Bob Fenwick had a great time serving up their special chili with a hint of Hawaiian flavor at a previous Chili Cook Off.

Who needs the notorious Iron Chef when Cook County offers its own culinary competition, the Cook County Chili Cook Off? The Cook County Chili Cook Off isn’t as cutthroat as the Food Network program, but you can be sure there are plenty of secret ingredients in the chili prepared by local chefs.

Whether you like a tomato and hot pepper chili, a five bean dish or with a flavorful white sauce, you’ll be sure to find a favorite at the 6th annual chili cook off at St. John’s Catholic Church on Saturday, March 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Organizers are accepting registrations now, so sign up today at info@coldwaterfoundation.org. Team registration is $50 by March 18. Dig out that old family recipe and see if you can claim the cornucopia trophy for Cook County’s best chili. Rumor has it that three-time winners Steve and Deb Veit may be returning. Come on out and see if your chili can top theirs!

And if you don’t feel like channeling Iron Chef, just come out and enjoy tasting the delicious offerings. The cost is $8 for adults; $4 for children 12 and under; and kids 2 and under are free. For $12 you can get “The Real Deal,” which includes admission, entry to raffle drawings and a Chili Cook Off commemorative mug.

The event is a lot of fun but also benefits the Cook County Youth Snacks and Pack program and the Coldwater Foundation, a leadership development organization.

Come on out to see whose chili will reign supreme.
