This month, we continue our series from the book What Do You Stand
For? A Guide to Building Character
by Barbara A. Lewis. There are multiple traits encompassed in building a positive character such as caring, citizenship, cooperation, fairness, honesty, relationships, respect, responsibility, and safety. Citizenship will be the focus in this article.

So, how do you become a good citizen? It seems to depend on what you do, not on what you think or what you wish you did. A citizen is a person who lives in a community with both rights and responsibilities and a good citizen uses his or her freedoms wisely. A good citizen shows respect for other people and the earth and does things to help at home, as well as in the community, state, country and even in the world.

There are lots and lots of ways to show others that you are a good citizen.

Three important ways are to show respect, be involved and serve others. The more of these things you do, the more people will see your good deeds. Your family, your friends, your teachers and everyone who gets to know you will trust you and want to include you in all kinds of important and fun activities and events. Below are many examples to help you become a good citizen. Try and incorporate at least a few into your life and once you get the hang of it, I bet you will come up with many of your own!
