Where you can and can’t use marijuana in Grand Marais come August 1

During the 2023 legislative session, a new law was passed that legalized adult-use cannabis in Minnesota beginning Aug. 1, 2023.

This legislation will bring about interesting changes to our social norms. The Grand Maras Council and Staff are committed to navigating these changes with care in an effort to balance personal freedoms, public safety, and goodwill in the community.

The City of Grand Marais is adopting an ordinance to provide some additional regulation to the use of marijuana consumer products in certain public places in the Grand Marais “downtown” area (the DW, H61, Protect Resources, and MU Zone Districts.) These restrictions do not apply to establishments or events licensed by the City, private residences, or private property unless the owner explicitly prohibits the use. These rules are designed to mimic the existing alcohol consumption ordinance.
