Where will outsourcing end?

I don’t get it. First the Cook County Board of Commissioners touts the power of Broadband to bring high paying telecommuting jobs into the county. Thenbefore the first dollar of the 1% sales tax is collected, the board decides it may be a good idea to outsource a high-paying county supervisory position to a telecommuting non-resident… the wave of the future.

Are the jobs “coming” or “going” because of Broadband?

Won’t this practice open the door to non-residents applying for county jobs?

Will elected positions such as the school board or hospital board be open to individuals living outside of Cook County?

Would we want someone like the emergency management director living out of the county? Perhaps out of the state?

How long before residents need to call a long distance number to speak with a county employee? “Press #1 for English, please.” Multiple menu choices and being transferred to voice mail are already annoying facts of life at county office numbers.

Shouldn’t jobs supported with county tax dollars be held by county residents? You’d think that would be a no brainer.

Although…

Perhaps some county jobs such as those held by the county commissioners should be outsourced to non-residents, as there does seem to be an obvious lack of talent in Cook County.
