Roe vs. Wade respects a woman/girl’s right to decide what to do when an unwanted pregnancy occurs. Abortion is one legal option. The Hippocratic oath is consistent with this personal decision making process.
When a state attempts to over-regulate abortions, puts up roadblocks via delays, misinformation, increases travel and expense, or sometimes even threatens practitioners, it increases hardship. If it is important to have a physician present for an abortion, why would a state cancel the physician’s license and or imprison the physician for participating in an abortion? Some states show no regard for a woman’s thoughtful decisions about her body which instead encourages the back alley, as a woman can be determined to choose her path even in danger. Where is the respect for a woman’s health and welfare?
Yes, the medical profession, not politicians, should guide medical standards of practice. And yet, as with most medical procedures, even under the best of circumstances there can be mishaps and unintended consequences from a full term pregnancy, giving birth, as well as an abortion. Sometimes it seems that the goal of the disputed regulations is to offer no choice, no abortions. Let us Minnesotans continue to protect a woman’s liberty, her right to choose her destiny.
