Going through a pile of past Heralds I noted in the Feb. 10 issue that Garry Gamble asserted that morality comes from his god. Really! Notwithstanding proclamations from his god or the gods of numerous other people in the world, for many of us, morality – right from wrong – is practiced absent godly input.
Knowing the right thing and doing it simply because it is the right thing, not to punch a ticket to heaven or avoid a trip to hell or other imaginary after-death destinations. More problematical when people believe their morality is divinely inspired is the urge to give those beliefs the force of law.
My god says no alcohol on my Sabbath so close the liquor stores. (No longer- Hallelujah!) My god says no buying a Chevy on my Sabbath so close the car dealers.
More seriously, my god says no abortion so require women to relinquish control of their bodies.
Why not live your sense of morality without forcing it on the great unwashed? Just don’t buy your bourbon or Chevy or have an abortion. I hope it can be left unsaid that I am not referring to laws enacted to prohibit people harming people.
