The last week has been poor for walleye fishing according to the anglers stopping by Buck’s Hardware Hank. One fisherman said South Fowl Lake was really slow.
Lake trout are being caught on Gunflint Lake in 22-25 feet of water off the bottom and at Moss Lake in 28-30 feet of water. Reports are that the fish out of Moss Lake are very nice. Fishermen have also had trout success on Saganaga Lake in 40 feet of water.
Kemo Lake anglers have caught fish in 8-12 feet of water using orange Swedish Pimple and minnow. Trout Lake has lived up to its name with lots of fish being caught in 25’-30’ of water.
Fishermen report that splake are being found in Musquash Lake in 19 feet of water using wax worms.
Brook trout are also biting on wax worms on Carrot Lake, in about 15 feet of water, and Loft Lake, in 12-15 feet of water.
The Trail Center Lodge winter fishing contest continues. The folks in the lead in the lake trout category were bumped this week. Now in the lead is Chad Morawitz of Grand Marais, with a 35-inch trout and a 30-inch trout. Right behind him is Jeff Eliasen with 27-incher. Tying with Eliasen is Katie Kimbler with her 27-inch trout. There are a few entries in other categories— Scott Wolf is now in the lead with a 30-inch walleye. Curtis Blake is in second with a 22-inch walleye.
The contest for brook trout is neck and neck, with Larry Sheils bringing in a 13-inch brookie and Bruce Sandstrom inching him out with a 13 ¼-inch brook trout.
Marlo Larson brought in the first entry in the northern pike category, a nice 26½- inch pike. And in another category, Gene Bullock is in the lead with a 13-inch crappie.
