Where are the fish biting?

After a brief hiatus, the fishing report is back, thanks to Jon at Buck’s Hardware.

Jon said he has been told that walleyes have been tough unless anglers head to places like Deeryard, Elbow, or Devilfish lakes. Hungry Jack Lake was reporting good action at about 20 -25 feet last week.

The bigger lakes like Gunflint, Sag, and Seagull are “iffy” for ice, said Jon. Fishermen might want to give a call to a resort up the Gunflint Trail to get the best and most current ice conditions.

Lake trout opened this past weekend in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCAW) and more than a few fishermen traveled up to Daniels and Duncan. Jon said that “Lotsa little ones” were caught, according to his sources.

Reports are that South Lake produced a bit better if you want to make the trek.

The “real trout season”—outside the BWCAW— opens in a couple of weeks. Many people agree with Jon, who said, “Trout outside of the Boundary Waters is when the fun begins. Splake, Brookies…aahh, the life!”

Jon said the best odds might be dropping a sucker minnow down to pick up northerns that are lurking. Quite a few people have been doing well. Devil Track was giving up a few northerns as was Crescent and East Twin

Jon appealed to local fishermen to stop by and talk to the folks at Buck’s Hardware to provide information for the fishing report. Or give Hal at the News-Herald a call at (218) 387-9100.

Let us know where the fish are biting! Good luck!
