Where are the fish biting?

Tyson at Beaver House says northerns are biting on Devil Track, Loon and Poplar lakes. Smallmouth bass are biting on Two Island Lake.

Rainbow trout and splake are biting on Mink, Kimball and Trestle Pine lakes. Walleyes are biting on Devil Track in the evenings on leeches, slip bobber and Beaver Flicks in 6 to 15 feet of water. Also, walleyes are being caught on Two Island and Crescent lakes.

On Lake Superior, the lake trout and salmon bite have improved. A nice 8-pound lake trout was caught recently on Gunflint Lake.

Brookies are biting in the area streams and Brule, Poplar and Cascade.

At Buck’s Hardware Hank, Jon reports that walleyes are hitting at 17 to 22 feet along the weed lines and shelves. Larger fish are being reported at 40 feet or so. Jigs and leeches or minnows seem to be working best, though some are stopping and using a slip bobber once they find the fish.

Crescent Lake had some good action. Fish were a little small but you can go home with some eaters if you sift through them. East Twin reported good action trolling with minnow rigs. Jigging was successful too in about 12 feet or so.

Jerry Skarupa of Secret Lures reports lake trout in Lake Superior are 120 to 140 feet down with a surface temp of 50-52 degrees. It has been great fishing all summer.

Salmon are located from 160 feet down up to the surface. Now is a great time to get out, he said.


Francis Trout had a fun afternoon of fishing with his grandpa Poot Drouillard of Hovland on the Pigeon River. Francis’ mom, Dawn Drouillard, joined them and they brought home a nice stringer of walleyes for grandma Joyce to fry up for dinner.
