Although fishermen have been secretive, a few have shared tips on where the fish are biting. John at Buck’s Hardware says walleyes are biting at Elbow Lake in 4-6 feet of water off the weeds, with jig and minnow. At Tom Lake, the bite is deeper in 10-12 feet of water using jig and minnow in the evening. There is 15 inches of ice. Devil Fish Lake also has fish biting deeper, in 10-12 feet of water, with jig and minnow.
Boundary Waters lake trout fishing has been pretty good. Duncan and Daniels lakes are hitting best with jig and minnow. The best depth at Daniels has been 15 feet. Partridge Lake has seen some nice trout in 12-15 feet. They are much deeper at Pine Lake, in 40 feet of water.
The Trail Center Lodge winter fishing contest is now open and so far has only two entries. In first place in the lake trout category is Devin Deschampe with a 24-inch lake trout. In second place is E. Fosness with a 23-inch lake trout.
There are no entries in the walleye, ‘northern or splake categories, so get fishing!
Remember, trout opener outside the Boundary Waters is Friday, January 15.
