Where are the fish biting?

Although many

fishermen are waiting

for warmer

weather to hit the ice

a few have found success.

Tim Quaife at Mike’s Holiday in

Grand Marais has heard that lake trout are hungry in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

Quaife also said the lake trout are “biting great” on Daniels and South Lake. He added that there is about six inches of ice on Daniels.

John at Buck’s Hardware has also heard that lake trout are hitting in the BWCAW. Fishing has been slow on Duncan Lake, but what has been caught was with jig and minnow. Daniels Lake has been good at 15-feet of water with jig and minnow and Pine Lake anglers have found success at 40 feet. Partridge Lake has also been good at 15 feet of water.

Walleyes are biting on Northern Light Lake in 8 feet of water with jig and minnow; on East Twin at 15 feet of water with jig and minnow. John said fish are biting at 20 feet on Lake Saganaga but it is a bit slow.

Anglers brave enough to face the cold should consider bringing their catch to Trail Center Lodge, which is sponsoring a winter fishing contest. Bring your catch (walleye, northern, splake, lake trout, etc.) to Trail Center to be measured. Winners will be announced March 31, 2010. One grand prizewinner will be drawn from all first place winners.
