Photo by Lyle Saethre This 38-inch 15-pound northern pike was caught by David Saethre on Picket Lake, a fly-in lake in Ontario Canada. Dave’s dad Lyle Saethre missed netting the northern twice with the third try a charm. The fish was released after photo and measurement. In addition to its large size, the northern has a very prominent lower jaw.
By all reports, fishing has been good this week. Crescent Lake in Lutsen is a favorite spot for bass, hitting at three to ten feet. One fisherman said they are “literally all over the place.” Walleyes are also biting on Crescent, but they are harder to find.
Anglers have also been finding success on Devil Track Lake trolling for walleyes with rapalas.
There have been numerous favorable reports of lake trout fishing on the Big Lake. The Beaver House reports that the lake trout have been biting on Lake Superior for fishermen using a new minnow spoon from Germany (available only at the Beaver House).
Photo by Cathi Williams Parker and Melissa Torkelson from Park Rapids, MN, honeymooning in Grand Marais, spent a day fishing with the Fishin’ Chics and Captain David Williams. Melissa was reeling in the fish and it was bigger than she could handle, so she passed it off to her new husband and he landed it. It weighed 12 pounds 2 ounces and was just one of four nice lake trout they caught.
Photo by Dick Nelson Larry and Barb Spaulding of Grand Marais took a short break from the Bed & Breakfast and printing businesses to go fishing with Lutsen’s Dick Nelson aboard the “Freeloader Charters.” Although they have lived here for four years, this is the first time the Spauldings ventured out on Lake Superior. They had great luck; this is just one of the nice big lake trout they caught.
Photo by Darren Peck Mark Weiler and Karis Thompson of Fargo, North Dakota caught and released this big 16 pound 2 ounce lake trout. They released the 36″ long trout. They were fishing with Captain Darren Peck of Tofte Charters who said it was the second big fish of the day. A 14-pound lake trout had been caught and released 10 minutes earlier.
