Where are the fish biting?

With the opening of lake trout season outside of the Boundary Waters last weekend, it would seem that lake trout would be the star of this week’s Fish Report. That isn’t the case though. Fishermen have been reporting some lake trout action, but fish of all kinds are being found under the ice.

Jon at Buck’s Hardware reports that splake are being caught in six to 10 feet of water on Musquash Lake with waxies and an ice jig. Tyson of the Beaver House, at his winter home Mike’s Holiday, said he has heard that the splake are the best catch on Musquash.

Rainbow and lake trout are being caught on Trout Lake, in depths of 15 to 20 feet, with a few at 35 feet.

Leo Lake has seen some action in 12 to 20 feet with spoons and Pimples, according to Jon. The fish reported are rainbows and splake, with the splake a bit deeper. Tyson said rainbow are also being caught in Kimball.

The lake trout on Seagull Lake are reported to be in 18 to 25 feet biting on Jigging Ice Raps. Jon suggests tipping it with a minnow. Jon had no news on Saganaga, but Tyson has heard that lake trout are hitting in Sag in 40 feet of water.

According to Tyson, the other good lakes for lake trout are Trout, Kemo, Clearwater, and Gunflint.

Brook Trout are biting on Carrot Lake on small ice jigs and waxies in 10 to 15 feet of water.

Whatever you are fishing for—good luck and stay warm and dry!
