Where are the fish biting?

Happy New Year, fishermen—finally, lake trout fishing begins. Well, within the Boundary Waters, it begins on January 1, 2011. Since the season hadn’t opened yet at press time, Jon at Buck’s Hardware hadn’t heard any specific tips as to depths or bait, but he did have some recommendations on lakes to try. Head to Duncan, Daniels, or Alder lakes.

Anglers will have to wait until January 15 for lake trout on lakes outside the Boundary Waters.

In the meantime, Jon said he has heard some good reports on walleye on Seagull or Saganaga. He said fishermen have had luck on the humps in about 30 to 38 feet of water with jig and minnow. He said Elbow Lake is producing both walleyes and perch in 6 to 10 feet near the weed beds using jig and minnow. In Lutsen, Crescent Lake is producing in 18 to 24 feet of water. And he has heard that Deer Yard Lake is active if you want to stay busy with some smaller fish.
