Fishermen have been anxiously waiting for the lakes to freeze so they could once again wet a line. This week, Jon at Buck’s Hardware said he has been hearing reports of some success, although primarily on the smaller lakes. He urged caution on the larger lakes such as Gunflint, Saganaga and Greenwood. “But ice making has been pretty good thus far so I’d expect those lakes to be ready soon,” he said at press time on Tuesday.
Jon said there has been a little walleye action on Northern Light Lake in six to 10 feet of water. There have also been a few decent-eating sized walleye caught in Elbow at six to 12 feet. And, the perch are also biting, he said. Seagull has decent ice and the walleyes are hitting on rainbow cubs. On the West End, Caribou Lake is producing in 18 to 24 feet of water with regular chubs as bait with an ice jig.
Northerns are hitting on Devil Track and Northern Light lakes and Jon recommends sucker minnows.
