Although a lot of people are out hunting—grouse, bear, moose or deer (by bow)—there are still a few diehard fishermen out there.
Jon at Buck’s Hardware cautions that the walleye are still biting, but quite deep, between 35 and 50 feet using a jig and minnow on Seagull and Saganaga. He said Poplar has also been pretty good and the fish are hanging out between 25 and 35 feet with jig and minnow. Cascade is another spot with some fish reports in the 25 to 30 foot range. But overall, the walleye bite has been pretty tough, said Jon.
Rainbows are hitting in a few area lakes. Jon recommends Leo, Esther, and Trout with night crawlers in 18 to 25 feet of water.
Tyson at Mike’s Holiday in Grand Marais, away from his Beaver House summer home, said a few inland lakes have been fruitful with splake and rainbow trout being caught in Mink, Trestle Pine, and Leo lakes. He said fishermen have been using beaver flicks and worms and have had the best luck by floating off the bottom.
The rivers are the place to be according to Tyson, with a few kings and Coho salmon heading upstream. He said some nice steelhead have been caught too. Anglers have had success using spawn sacks, flicks and yarn.
