The fishing report is getting smaller as the season winds down and folks are concentrating on grouse hunting and preparing for deer season.
However, Jon at Buck’s Hardware reports that there is still action on Lake Saganaga and Seagull Lake, but fairly deep, between 25 to 35 feet. Anglers are having success by jigging minnows.
Tyson from the Beaver House, which is now open by appointment only, has moved to his “winter home” over at Mike’s Holiday in Grand Marais. As an area fishing aficionado, he is still getting fishing reports, but he too says it is getting “spotty.”
Tyson has heard that a few walleye and smallmouth bass have been caught at Two Island and Elbow lakes. He said a few rainbow trout are still being caught on Mink, Kimball, and Thompson lakes.
Jon added reports that trout have also been caught in about 15 feet of water on Leo and Ram lakes. He reminds fishermen that trout season ends Sept. 30.
Jon has heard that northerns are still moving in some lakes caught by bobber fishing with suckers in 8 to 12 feet in lakes such as Hungry Jack, Poplar and Elbow. Of course, as always, northerns are still hitting on spoons as well. Jon reports that the “biggest fish story” revolves around Lake Superior rivers. He said pink salmon are gathering in the streams and there have been reports of a few Chinooks. Tyson too, said streams are the happening spot right now, with the pinks and a few steelheads being caught, as well as some brookies.
Jon said lakers and salmon seem to be staging in front of the rivers so your best bet for them is fishing on the Big Lake.
