Where are the fish biting?

The latest reports to John at Buck’s Hardware have been good from walleye fishermen. They report that walleyes are biting on Lake Saganaga in 6 – 12 feet of water around weed beds, using Lindy rigs or slip bobber rigs with leeches. Other lakes that have walleyes biting are Poplar Lake in 8 -10 feet of water off rock ledges using minnow or leeches on jigs; Homer Lake in 15 feet of water using live bait setup on Lindy rigs or slow troll with raps and Two Island Lake in 8 – 12 feet of water using jig and minnow or slip bobber with leeches.

Lake Saganaga has also been giving up some nice lake trout in 30 feet of water, using jigs and minnows. Other good lake trout lakes this week were Mayhew Lake with fish in 25 feet of water using jigs or small spoons tipped with pieces of minnow and Clearwater Lake – in 25 or 45 feet of water using jig and minnows.

For rainbow trout, Leo Lake was excellent this week, caught by using crawlers in 20 – 22 feet. Rainbow have also been caught in Moss Lake in 25 feet of water with a crawler off the bottom and Esther Lake in 15 feet of water with crawlers.

This 41-inch northern was caught by Rose Sheils in the Boundary Waters using an ultra light pole with six-pound test line and had to be landed with no landing net. She was fishing with her son Kevin who lifted the fish into the canoe after the fish finally tired out. At one point the line was twisted around the fish and Rose and Kevin both feel very lucky they were able to get the massive fish at all.
