Where are the fish biting?

We’re getting into the dog days of summer when fishing is supposed to slow down. But for one young man who was camping on Winchell Lake three casts from shore brought in three northern that were 36 inches, 36 inches and 40 inches. He released all of the big fish but had the thrill of a lifetime. The campsite he and his girlfriend were at was the one his girlfriend’s father had brought her and her four 13-14-year-old girlfriends to 14 years earlier. Someday, when this couple gets married and has children, hopefully they will bring their kids back to this campsite and tell them stories about Winchell Lake and the magical time they spent in the BWCA.

Captain Kelly Shepard of North Shore Outdoors Lake Superior Charters reports that good numbers of lake trout are being caught in the 120- to 170-foot range on Lake Superior using down riggers and Dipsy Divers with spoons. The water is still cold, with temperatures at 49 degrees F.

Kelly said there are a few salmon around, but fishermen are still waiting for them to appear in larger numbers.

Inland, walleye fishing has slowed down due to a mayfly hatch. If you want to try your luck, jig with minnows, night crawlers, or leeches in 15 feet of water on Devil Track Lake or pick another walleye lake and fish at dusk for your best chance to catch your limit.

Tyson from the Beaver House showed a picture of a five-pound lake trout he had recently caught from his kayak just off shore in Lake Superior. A second picture showed a gentleman holding an 8-10 pound lake trout he caught from the Coast Guard breakwall 40 minutes after purchasing a silver and blue Little Cleo spoon from Tyson.

Fishing’s good all over, said Tyson.

Two featured baits are new artificial walleye and smelt minnows made by Rapala. “I’m guaranteeing people their money back if they buy these and then don’t catch fish with them” Tyson said. So far no one has come in to get his or her money back.
