Even though it’s still technically summer, it feels like fall weather, which is great for anglers who wish to fish. While the bugs aren’t around to bite, the fish are here and with some searching, can be lured into biting.
Forrest Parson at Hungry Jack Lodge reports that smallmouth bass can be caught using artificial lures and Wacky Worm rigs, leeches and crawlers. Bass are in the 18- to 19-inch range.
Walleyes, said Forrest, are being caught with Lindy rigs and spinners using leeches or crawlers. He suggests fishing rock ledges just as it’s getting dark.
Leo Lake is still producing lots of rainbow trout, said Forrest. Best methods to catch rainbow are to troll or still fish with a crawler and a slip sinker.
Tyson at the Beaver House said walleyes are biting on Two Island, Elbow, Devil Track, Ball Club, Seagull, Sag and Crescent lakes on Beaver Flicks or Beaver House float rigs off the bottom. Pink and chartreuse colored lures baited with leeches and night crawlers work the best.

Lake Superior lake trout can be caught from the surface down to 150 feet on blue and white or blue and silver, chartreuse, and watermelon colored Beaver Flick spoons. Tyson said Sutton silver and gold spoons, and all silver spoons also work well.
Some nice catches of smallmouth bass are being reported on Two Island and Devil Track lakes, Tyson said.
As far as stream fishing, Tyson said brook and rainbow trout are being caught on all area streams. He suggests using night crawlers and Beaver Flicks on Kadunce and Brule River.
Captain Kelly Shepard of North Shore Outdoors Lake Superior Charters reports that lake trout fishing on Lake Superior is good: lake trout are scattered any where from 120 feet to 150 feet. Few salmon are around but “pinks” are here and not too hard to catch. When fishing for trout Shepard advises using flat lining spoons, Dipsy Divers and spoons fixed to leaders on lead core line.
Spoon colors that attract the fish the best are gold, orange, watermelon, purple and pink spots, or glow, said Shepard.
Inland, walleye fishing has picked up using jig and minnows in water 10 to 12 feet deep.
