Walleye
Smaller lakes, 10 feet deep and under, are producing walleyes. Hungry Jack Lake has been good at six – 10 feet using a jig and minnow. In North Lake, walleyes have been caught by trolling Rapalas in 12 feet of water. However, fishermen caution that there is low water in the entrance.
On Lake Saganaga, anglers are finding walleye deep—at 45 – 55 feet—using a jig and chub. The best technique is using a fish finder to find shallow pockets with schools—there are some nice-size eaters there.
Lake trout
Lake trout, as News-Herald Tails from
the Trail
columnist Cory Christianson reports, have been good on all area lakes. They’ve been caught on Lake Saganaga on the 30-foot reefs just under the surface using jig and minnow. On Gunflint Lake bigger trout have been caught in 30 feet of water using shallow diving lures. Anglers recommend looking for structure.
Clearwater Lake trout have been found in 35 – 40 feet of water using shallow diving lures because the fish are suspended.
Rainbow Trout
Some nice rainbows have been caught in Trout Lake, using crawlers strong off the bottom in 12 – 15 feet of water. Fly fishing in the evenings has been good.
Esther Lake rainbows have been found in 10 – 12 feet of water using a bobber and crawler. Anglers recommend a slow troll with a Swedish pimple. Fly fishing has also been good on Esther—and a few splake have been caught there too.
Northern Pike
There are few fishing experiences more exciting than bringing aboard a nice northern. Fishermen have had that fun on Hungry Jack Lake in 8 feet of water using raps or sucker minnows in weed beds off the bottom. Northern have been biting on Loon Lake by casting spoons in the shallows in weed beds. Northern Light River has yielded some northerns in 6 – 10 feet of water on jig and minnow.
Small mouth bass
Although News-Herald
editor Rhonda Silence had no luck on Devil Track Lake, other anglers report that bass have been caught with a jig or crawler in 12 – 15 feet of water.
Bass have also been caught on Hungry Jack Lake in 15feet of water using jig and crawler and Mepps close to shore.
Overall
Vince Ekroot of Little Vince’s Guide Service in Grand Marais reports that the trout have been biting extremely well. Ekroot said he filled parties out with lake trout, splake, and brook trout (with a few nice rainbows thrown in) all week.
