Where are the fish biting?

While anglers of all stripes are catching fish, angling for brook trout in the streams is hot right now. Limits are easy to achieve, and because not many people chase the wily brook trout, most streams have an abundance of fish. Remember, if you like to stream fish, you don’t have to leave with a limit of speckled trout. Catch and release means the trout will be able to keep their numbers up, and your favorite stream(s) should always have plenty of fish to pursue.

Tyson at the Beaver House reports that walleyes are biting at Two Island, Elbow, Two Island, Devil Track, Ballclub and Crescent lakes. You can catch them on Beaver Flicks or Beaver House float rigs, pink and chartreuse, and leeches.

Lake Superior lake trout are biting from the surface down to 120 feet on Beaver Flick spoons, blue and white or blue and silver and chartreuse, Sutton spoons silver and gold, and all silver. The water temperature is in the 60-degree range.

Both coho and chinook salmon are being caught from 80 feet up to the surface. Coaster lake trout are being caught at the mouths of the Cascade, Temperance and Polar rivers and Artist Point, off the breakwall and other Lake Superior points using Little Cleos, KO Wobblers, Sutton and Beaver Flick spoons.

The smallmouth bass bite on Two Island and Devil Track Lake has been good the past week, said Tyson. Brook trout can be caught on all area streams, he said, and rainbow trout are still being caught off and on at Kimball and Mink lakes.

Forrest Parson at Hungry Jack Lodge said smallmouth bass are being enticed to bite by fishing with artificial lures and Wacky Worm rigs, leeches, and crawlers. Nice bass, from the 17- to 20-inch range, have been caught from Rose Lake just below the falls.

Walleyes in the 14- to 22-inch range can be enticed with Lindy Rigs and leeches just as it gets dark, said Forrest.

Leo Lake is still producing lots of rainbow trout trolling or still fishing with a crawler.

Captain Kelly Shepard of North Shore Outdoors Lake Superior Charters reports that lake trout fishing in Lake Superior is hot right now. Finding salmon, on the other hand, is spotty. Lake trout are scattered anywhere from 200 feet to the surface. Flat lining spoons work well. Using Dipsy Divers, purple and pink spots, glow, orange and watermelon spoons has also been working well, said Shepard.
