Where are the fish biting?




How good is fishing right now? Adults and kids have been picking up some nice lake trout, brook trout and an occasional brown trout in the harbor, or casting from Artist Point of the Coast Guard breakwall. You don’t need a big boat to fish Lake Superior. Coho, lake trout and some coaster brook trout are also being caught in front of the mouths of streams and rivers flowing into Lake Superior.

Tyson at the Beaver House reported that this past week walleyes are still biting on Two Island, Elbow, Devil Track, Lichen, Seagull, Sag., Gunflint and Crescent lakes on Beaver Flicks or Beaver House float rigs and leeches.

Lake Superior lake trout are biting from the surface down to 130 feet on Beaver Flick spoons, blue and white or blue and silver and chartreuse. Sutton silver and gold spoons and Sutton silver spoons are also working well to entice the lake trout.

Water temperatures are in the 58-degree range. Coho and chinook salmon are being caught from 80 feet up to the surface. Coaster lake trout are being caught at the mouths of the Cascade, Temperance and Polar rivers and Artist Point, off the breakwall and other Lake Superior points using little Cleos, KO Wobblers, Sutton and Beaver Flick spoons.

Smallmouth bass action is hot on Two Island, Elbow and Devil Track lakes.

Brook and rainbow trout fishing is pretty great on all area streams.

Rainbow trout are still biting on Kimball and Mink lakes.

Captain Kelly Shepard of North Shore Outdoors Lake Superior Charters reports lake trout and salmon fishing on Lake Superior is really good at this time. Lake trout are scattered from 220 feet to the surface. Flat lining spoons are working well. Those using Dipsy Divers and spoons are typically having good success. The water temperature is at 58 degrees. Purple and pink spots, glow and watermelon spoons have also been working well to entice the fish to bite.

Forrest Parson from Hungry Jack Lodge said the smallmouth bass bite is still on. Bass were running in the 16- to 18-inch range using artificial lures and Wacky Worm rigs, leeches and crawlers.

Walleyes are being caught with a bobber, leech and jig or Lindy rigs from sunset to one hour after.

A 38-inch northern was caught from Swamper Lake as were three 12- to 14-inch walleyes.

Leo Lake is still producing lots of rainbow trout trolling or still fishing with a crawler.
