Where are the fish biting?





Rae Lynn Billbe of Rockford, Minnesota caught this nice 36- inch lake trout while fishing with Captain Kelly Shepard of North Shore Outdoors Lake Superior Charter Fishing last week. Her uncle is Cook County Auditor Braidy Powers. Captain Shepard joked, “Too bad Braidy had to work and miss out on the charter.”

The News-Herald received this report from Forrest at Hungry Jack Lodge:

A party caught a 30- inch walleye off one of the cabin docks at 11 p.m. on a 3-4-inch sucker minnow, hook and bobber.

Lots of smallmouth bass are being caught using artificial baits and leeches.

Limits of rainbow trout are being caught in Leo Lake with night crawlers.

Big northerns are being caught on the north side of West Bearskin Lake using crank baits and big sucker minnows.

And from Tyson at the Beaver House:

Walleye slowed down a little due to a Mayfly hatch. Tyson said small walleyes are biting well on Devil Track Lake on chartreuse or pink Beaver Flicks in depths of 8 feet in the evenings. Anglers on Crescent Lake with a leech and slip bobber are doing well. Also Elbow, East Twin and Two Island lakes are doing well.

There have been some nice sized muskies caught on Crescent Lake and northerns on Devil Track.

Jaidev, 7, (left) and Jaya, 5, of Ames, Iowa, had a fantastic day of fishing with Joe Carlson of Joe’s Inland Fishing. Jaidev caught his first walleye and Jaya her first fish ever. Both fish were caught on a chartreuse Beaver Fick in 7 feet of water.

Smallmouth bass are biting great on Poplar Lake and most other lakes on the surface with torpedoes, artificial crawfish and Beaver Flicks.

Lake trout are being caught in the mouth of Cascade and Poplar River using Little Cleos, Krocodile and Rooster Tails.

Out in Lake Superior nice lake trout are being caught next to shore. Out farther on the Big Lake a few Coho salmon have been caught. An 8-pound king salmon was caught on Superior last week. Lake trout have been caught off Artist Point on a Little Cleo. Lake trout are biting well on Clearwater Lake up the Trail.

Brook trout and rainbows are seeing action in the streams on flies, Beaver Flicks, Mepp’s Spinners or plain hooks with a crawler. Also Mink, Kimball and Trout lakes are doing well. Brookies are biting in the streams like Kadunce, Temperance and Brule Rivers.

Anglers report 16- 18-inch rainbows off shore or in a boat using artificial lures and Beaver Flicks.

Captain Jerry Skarupa of Secret Lures said the winds have kept him off the lake for a couple of days. He said lake trout are spotty at various depths. A few salmon have been found at around 100 feet. The water temperature ranges around 51-52 degrees.
