Jon at Buck’s Hardware Hank has this week’s holiday report:
As Independence Day approaches it looks as if it’s gonna be a good weekend to head out fishing.
We sell nationally recognized flies at Buck’s tied by Dave Asproth. They are beautiful. Unfortunately, the fly has to be attached to a fisherman who is capable of presenting it without splashing around and scaring the bejesus out of the fish. So when I go out it can be a bit of a sideshow. Even so, catching fish on a fly rod is one of the most enjoyable ways for me to fish so I keep trying.
It’s a lot like golf – I’m fairly lousy at it, but once in awhile I nail a really, really nice shot and that keeps me coming back for more. When I flail about fly fishing, every once in awhile, a fish is stupid enough to go after the fly I throw out there. It’s enough to keep me coming back for more. I must admit, however, there’s been times on a stream when I end up tangled in some tree and looking like a marionette. I now realize why Pinocchio wanted to be a real boy.
Anyway, this week looks to be pretty nice so grab a kid and head out on the water before catching the fireworks in the evening. Walleyes are biting a bit slow so you might have more luck in the early morning and late evening hours, but the smallmouth bass are hitting hard and the lake trout fishing has been fairly successful as well. Don’t forget the stream trout as this is a great time of year to chase brookies in the streams.
Enjoy the weekend and Happy Birthday America!
