Where are the fish biting?

Former Cook County News-Herald staffer and local fisherman Dick Nelson periodically shares photos of fish caught aboard his boat which he has dubbed “Free Loader Charters.” This week he is sharing the story of Mike Boland, resident of Lutsen’s Caribou Lake, who had never been on Lake Superior before, nor had he caught a lake trout. He had beginner’s luck when he reeled in this massive lake trout. Nelson said the “Free Loader” skiff budget doesn’t have a ruler or scale, so the men had to guess to the big trout’s size. Nelson said it was a “two fist’r,” as in it took to fists to hold it up for the photo. Nelson said the beautiful lake trout was returned to the sea, where “it would likely win the 2015 Fisherman’s Picnic contest entry.”

Jon at Buck’s Hardware Hank files this week’s report:

Bear hunting started this past Monday with a few registered so far. I’m sure the numbers will grow as the week continues. The guides are reporting hits on their baits so let’s hope they have a decent hunt this year.

As far as fishing goes, the walleyes have been a little tough but some success was found at East Twin Lake fishing with jigs and minnows. Seagull was reporting pretty good action as well as Crocodile and Iron lakes. Many are drifting with minnow rigs off the bottom.

Northerns were hitting pretty well on area lakes with quite a few sucker minnows disappearing from the store.

Lake trout in Greenwood were down about 45 to 60 feet using ciscoes for bait. There were also some nice lakers in Sag at about the same depth. You might want to troll a few spoons in Sag.

Rainbows in Trout Lake were hitting on crawlers about 12 to 18 feet with lakers hitting on chubs down around 40 or 50 feet. Muckwa Lake and Talus Lake are a couple of rainbow trout lakes I looked up on the DNR website. I haven’t mentioned those two lakes in quite awhile. It might be worth a little hike to check out and see how those lakes are doing. Then again, it might just turn into a labored hike with zero fish as reward. That’s the thing about fishing – one never really knows what kind of a day it’ll turn out to be.

Capt. Jerry Skarupa of Secret Lures reports that lake trout fishing has slowed down and they went deep. Few salmon around.
