Where are the fish biting?

Although the ice on area lakes is melting
fast, fishermen reported some success this
week. John at Buck’s Hardware said there
are reports of walleye biting on South
Fowl Lake in 6 – 8 feet of water using a jig
and minnow by the falls.

Lake trout were being caught on Kemo Lake in 25 feet of water using a jig and minnow; on Trout Lake in 30 feet of water 10 feet off the bottom with minnow and jig and on Greenwood Lake in 40 feet, up 20 feet from the bottom. Fishermen reported that some are just under the ice and can be caught using a jig and minnow, or crawlers—if there is still ice, that is!

In the Trail Center Lodge Winter Fishing Contest, Rudy reports that entries keep coming in. On March 10, there was a 12-inch herring entered by Sporto. On March 13, John Cambronne entered a 34-inch lake trout and Vince Ekroot entered a 20-inch brown trout. On March 14, John Jacobsen brought in a 20 ½-inch brown trout. Gene Shelton also had an entry on March 14, a 14-inch crappie. Larry Sheils entered an 18 ½-inch rainbow trout on March 15. On St. Patrick’s Day, the Sheils brothers brought in some very nice fish—Lucas Sheils entered a 32-inch lake trout and Levi Sheils entered a 35-inch lake trout.

Congratulations to all the fishermen and if you’re still fishing be sure to use extreme caution as the ice thins. Ice conditions can change drastically from one day to the next.
