Where are the fish biting?

Jon’s fishing report from Buck’s Hardware Hank:

The word on fishing this week seems to be that walleyes are pretty tough to get right now. That’s OK though, the northern fishing and the smallmouth fishing has been excellent.

Head on up to Hungry Jack and Poplar lakes for some decent action on both those fronts. Trolling with Rapalas or spoons in 8 to 12 feet or so should hook you up with a northern or two. You could throw out a sucker minnow on a bobber and wait to see what hits. Smallies can be had with crawlers or plastics in water around the same depth.

Rainbows in Trout Lake and Leo Lake seem to be hitting on crawlers slowly trolling with a harness in 15 to 20 feet. I’d try a few techniques, however, and don’t forget the fly rod in the evening.

Superior is giving a few salmon up but the lakers are most prevalent. A lot are fishing in the 120- to 180-foot range. Watermelon and Pink Apex lures seem to be the color of choice.

That’s about it for this week so avoid the raindrops if you can and good luck out there.

Capt. Jerry Skarupa of Secret Lures says the lake trout fishing on Lake Superior has warmed up, and fish are scattered on the bottom. A handful of salmon are being caught, top 50 feet near shore or deeper.
