Micah’s fish report, courtesy of Buck’s Hardware Hank:

With the dog days of summer upon us, the fishing action has been exceptional, and there have been some nice fish being caught around the area.

The walleye have been continuing to hit in deeper water. During the day they are being caught in the 16- to 21-foot range. Leeches, crawlers and chubs remain the live bait of choice. Lindy rigs, slip bobbers or a plain ol’ jig have been very successful while fishing for walleye. Brule Lake has been really good to walleye fishermen lately.

The northern action over the past week has been extremely favorable in the sun-bathed portion of the afternoon using big sucker minnows, spinners or a shiny spoon.

The smallmouth bass are also hitting really well. I’ve had success casting and retrieving a floating Rapala, Hula Popper, or using a slip bobber and leech. The lakes that have been giving up some nice smallies are Greenwood and Devil Track.

A few nice lakers are being caught in the 45- to 65-foot range, but I have also heard of them being even a little deeper, so you might have to monkey around a little to find the depth where the lakers are biting. Word is that Moss Lake and Seagull have been putting out some nice lakers this past week. Small Rapalas and spoons are being widely used. Jigging is also producing success.

Capt. Jerry Skarupa of Secret Lures Superior Charter reports that lake trout fishing is very slow from the deep to the top – salmon are not around. Larger lake trout are out about four miles, fish the top 50 feet.

Lake Superior surface temp is 62 degrees and 40 feet down is 40 degrees.

Tyson at the Beaver House said walleyes are biting good on Two Island, Elbow and Crescent lakes. Seagull Lake up the Trail is also doing good.

Smallmouth bass are biting great on most lakes.

Brook trout are biting good on Kadunce, Cascade, Poplar and Temperance rivers.

Some are getting limits on Lake Superior lake trout in two hours from 20 feet to 40 feet deep using Warrior, Gold Star or German spoons that the Beaver House sells. Some salmon are being caught in Lake Superior as well.
