Capt. Jerry Skarupa of Secret Lures says not much has changed on Lake Superior.
Lake trout are being caught between 140 and 180 feet deep and water temps are around 44 degrees. A few mid-range fish have been taken, but just a handful of salmon are being caught.
Jon at Buck’s Hardware Hank submits this week’s report: Can you feel the excitement? Are you psyched up and ready to go? The Buck’s Hardware- Northern Wilds Fishing contest has begun and we’ve got plenty on the board already. You can check our website, www.buckshardware.net for the standings or come into the store for the most recent updates on our board.
There are some nice fish such as Clay Gruber-Schulz’s 4-pound smallmouth and Richard Hager’s 6-pound, 7-ounce walleye, waiting to be knocked down a peg or two, if you can.
Also worth a mention, though not in the contest, was a walleye caught on Gunflint Lake. Mike Hyzer called to say he released a 34-incher, but unfortunately we have no picture. But hey, I’ve never known a fisherman to lie, have you? Of course not.
The action out there has been pretty darn good so you should find some time to head on out to your favorite lake. Many people have started fishing the humps on their “secret” lakes. You know the ones, rising from deeper water to about 12 to 15 feet or so.
