Jon at Buck’s Hardware Hank submits this week’s update:
After a week of rain and shaking myself dry, like a dog, the weather guy said we’d have a pretty decent rest of this week. Yeah, I’ll believe it when I see it. There have been a few troopers out there hitting the lakes looking for an hour or two of dryness in the day to drop a line. And, they’re finding fish.
There’s been a little walleye action in Two Island, Brule, Homer and East Twin lakes. They’ve headed a bit deeper during the day, but you can find a few on some of the humps. Leeches are the bait of choice right now, whether you jig, lindy, or use a slip bobber.
Rainbow action was pretty good on Kimball and Trout lakes. Most everyone is using crawlers for live bait though some success has been reported on leeches too. Splake have been hitting as well in Mink, Brule and Musquash lakes.
As for lakers, Greenwood and Sag are reporting successes in 40 to 55 feet or so. You’ll probably have to play around a bit with the depths, however. Kemo is also giving up a few lakers.
Lake Superior lakers slowed a bit this past week but many are still fishing in that 120- to 160-foot range. Some salmon are being caught right now, but it hasn’t hit peak yet. As far as brookies go, I skipped the lakes and the easily accessed bridges and culverts in a bunch of the streams and the action was great. I went home with three 10- to 12-inchers for dinner. Perfect. Panther Martin spinners or just a crawler seemed to coax them out of their hiding places.
Capt. Jerry Skarupa of Secret Lures says it’s been lousy weather lately with 95 percent of the lake trout caught from 140 to 180 feet deep.
Lake Superior water temps are 39-40 degrees, and just a handful of salmon are being caught.
