Where are the fish biting?

Shirley Lindgren and her very good friend Coleen Brennan, both of Lutsen, had a great day of fishing on “Unnamed Lake” in Cook County on May 30. Shirley reeled in this monster walleye, measuring 27 inches. They released the fish.

Tyson at the Beaver House said walleyes are biting on Devil Track and Elbow lakes and most other walleye lakes on minnows and leeches.

Lake trout are being caught on Lake Superior 140 feet deep. Brook trout and splake are biting good now, too.

Northern pike are being taken on Devil Track and Two Island.

Buck’s Hardware Hank submits this round-up:

The summer solstice is nearly upon us and with that thought I realized in less than two weeks we start the inevitable decline into another winter. I sure hope you enjoyed it while it lasted.

One thing that does continue is the decent success of the fishermen. Devil Track lake is still producing walleyes. Sounds like jigs and minnows or leeches are working. Also Lindy set-ups are a good way to go. A few other walleye lakes I’ve been hearing about include Homer, Cascade, and Crescent – same M.O. concerning the use of minnows and leeches. Depths I’ve been hearing about range from around eight to 18 feet depending on the time of day.

Northerns have been out and about as well with people trolling Rapalas and spoons. Don’t forget those sucker minnows, either.

Also, some bass stories are beginning to circulate around Hungry Jack and Poplar lakes. I should also mention, some are coming in with beautiful splake and brookies. It’s a good time to hit your secret brookie lake. I’d mention a few lakes but I received a fairly detailed threat that if I gave up the names of these lakes, a certain writer could be fitted with a really comfortable set of concrete shoes. Let’s not find out if they’re able to compensate for my bunions.
