Where are the fish biting?

The Schei family of Loon Lake on the Gunflint Trail has experienced some fantastic fishing since fishing opener. On May 15, Sue Schei caught this impressive 29½-inch walleye, while fishing with her son, Gunflint Lodge fishing guide Jon Schei. On the same day, Jon Schei also caught a 40½-inch northern pike, and a 29- inch walleye.

Buck’s Hardware Hank offers this week’s report:

Word this week is the walleyes have become a bit tougher to catch. The bait of choice still appears to be chubs although the leeches are definitely starting to leave the store. During the daytime hours people are fishing a little deeper, while in the evening they’re following the fish into the shallows.

Two Island, East Twin and Devil Track lakes are going fairly decent. Jigs and minnows and leech rigs seem to be doing the trick. I also heard about a bit of action on Northern Light and Hungry Jack lakes. Trout action up at Sag and Greenwood is down a little but there are people bringing in some nice fish.

Northerns, using a bobber and sucker minnow or trolling a spoon, have been hitting in Northern Light, Loon, and Poplar lakes. But those are only a couple that I’ve heard about.

Tyson at the Beaver House is happy to open for the season and submits this update:

Walleyes are biting on Seagull, Sag, Two Island, Devil Track and Northern Light, on minnows and leeches.

Lake trout are being caught on Gunflint Lake, Greenwood, Sag and Seagull, Moss and Mountain lakes.

Brook trout, rainbows and splake on Mink and Kimball lakes.

Northern pike on Northern Light, Elbow, Little Cascade on spoons and big spinners.
