Where are the fish biting?

Cold weather does not deter Gunflint Trail resident Larry Schei of Loon Lake from fishing. Larry caught this spawned out 30-inch walleye on Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Larry was fishing with his wife Sue, and his son, Gunflint Lodge guide, Jon Schei.

This week’s report from Buck’s Hardware Hank:

It would appear the vast majority of the lakes will be open for the weekend. Let the party commence!

Walleyes have been spotted and caught when fishing in 6 to 10 feet of water using chubs and jigs. I’ve not heard much yet about specific lakes except for Devil Track (which has been producing quite well). I suspect all your favorite walleye lakes will be producing soon if they aren’t already.

A few fish tales have been filtering into the store about limits being caught in a couple of hours, but you know fishermen, always tellin’ the truth. They have to be among the most honest folk I know.

Lake trout rumors abound up near the end of the Gunflint as people are dropping ciscoes on jigs as well as trolling spoons. Most reports have been shallow for the lakers. Northern action has also been fairly hot. Northern Light Lake was producing a few, much to the chagrin of the walleye fishermen who were there. By the way, hats off to Dan Anderson for the brookie he caught.

Steelhead are running in the rivers right now, but the river levels are dropping rapidly so get out there while the fishing’s hot. Heck, even I stumbled onto a 22-incher. It had a beautiful pink stripe and was dripping with spawn. I put that lady back in the water as quickly as I could.
