Where are the fish biting?

John Laurich from Sartell, Minn.caught this massive 27-pound, 43-inch lake trout on September 18 while fishing with Captain Darren Peck of Tofte Charters. The big trout made a new record for Tofte Charters. It was released back into the cold waters of Lake Superior, perhaps to be caught again someday.

Buck’s Hardware Hank weekly report:

Fishing seemed to pick up a little over the past week as people were fishing rock piles and humps in the 15- to 20-foot range. There was decent action on Sea Gull and Gunflint lakes. For some of the smaller lakes one can head to Two Island or Kemo and give it a shot. Try off the rocks in Two Island in 12 to 15 feet or so.

Rainbows in Leo Lake were not only being caught down deep on night crawlers, but they also had a pot-o-gold at the end of them. One could head to Trout Lake for a few rainbows and end up being frustrated. Or, you might get lucky. Who knows? It’s Trout Lake!

I stopped off at Shoe Lake recently for a little casting from shore. Evidently there’s no fish where one launches, from what I could tell anyway. However I did observe a bunch of rises on the lake. A canoe or float tube and a fly or two might produce quite few fish.

People are still going at it on the big lake and I understand the pinks are running in the streams if you’re interested. Other than that, just get out there and enjoy these fabulous fall days ahead.
