Where are the fish biting?

After helping Dick Nelson with engine maintenance on May 16, Larry McNeally joined Nelson on a test drive. The men cruised around ice floes in Lake Superior to make sure everything had been reinstalled correctly and there were no leaks. Of course as long as they were out on the water, they decided to wet a line. They had great success in the 35-degree water, catching their limit of lake trout. Larry shows off the catch.

Jon at Buck’s Hardware Hank is back with this week’s report:

Word on the street is the walleyes are shallow, as one might expect this early in the season. Elbow, Crescent, Two Island, Hungry Jack and the Twin lakes are all reporting good action. In fact most of the lakes are doing well.

Pretty much anything is working except for leeches as it’s a bit cold for them. Minnows and night crawlers on jigs, Rapalas trolled or cast, it all seems to be working as long as it’s in 4 to 8 feet of water. People are casting Raps up in the rocks and jigging in the familiar weed beds where currently there are no weeds. The one constant I’m hearing is no one is very deep.

As far as lakers go, they were hot last week and fairly shallow. Try trolling spoons as well as the old jig and minnow set-up. But to be honest, not much word on the lakers as most people are searching for walleyes. Please let me know how the lakers are biting so far as I personally don’t do a whole lot of lake trout fishing.

Northerns are also doing pretty well on sucker minnows in 4 to 10 feet of water. Also a brief mention for you smallmouth fishermen out there – I saw a few pictures of smallies caught this past week and they were beauts. I promised the guy I wouldn’t give up the lake, let’s simply say one shouldn’t forget the joy of a really nice smallmouth on the line.
