Where are the fish biting?

Steve and Eric Ford have to be some of the first fishermen out on Lake Superior in 2013. They launched their 14-foot boat and fished just outside the Grand Marais harbor on Wednesday, March 27. Steve shows off the nice 3-pound lake trout they caught. A great spring dinner!

The season’s final report from Jon at Buck’s Hardware:

This is the last report until fishing opener. Don’t all cry at once, I’m only gonna be gone for a little while before the lies come flooding back at you.

Reports this week were of slush…a whole lot of it. Fishing is slow but some people are finding a few fish. If it’s walleyes you’re looking for, some have headed for South Fowl Lake. Sag is always another option—Ray Zickrick caught and released a 29-inch walleye there.

As far as lakers are concerned, Moss, Clearwater, and Loon are a few lakes I’ve heard about but no one said the fishing was fantastic. They worked for their dinner. Don’t forget Sag for the lakers, either. Trout Lake is another option, though the fish reports said they were pretty small.

The season is winding down as we anticipate the arrival of the May opener. Let’s everyone stay safe out there!

At press time there were only a few days left of fishing season and the competition in the Trail Center Lodge Fishing Contest continues.

Taking the lead in the lake trout category from Chris Callendar (who took it from Jeff Eliasen, who took it from Ed Zlonis) was Julie Collman. Julie brought in an awesome 35-inch lake trout.

Kristie Batz is still in the lead in the northern category, but she beat her own record this week. She was in the lead with a 29-inch and this week she solidified her lead with a 35-inch northern.

The other anglers in the lead at press time remain the same as last week.
