Where are the fish biting?

Jon from Buck’s Hardware, who provides angling information for the Cook County News-Herald took part in the 2013 Ice Fishing Extravaganza on Gull Lake in Brainerd. Jon writes: “I’ve just blown in from the Ice Fishing Extravaganza on Gull Lake. With 30 to 35 mph sustained winds the enjoyment was blown right out of me. Anything that wasn’t anchored down blew to the shore, including people.

“Gusts over 45 mph were recorded, 14 contestants were later found in Garrison. They decided to just fish there since they were so close to Mille Lacs.”

Locally Jon said he has been hearing that for walleyes, fishermen should try heading out to Hungry Jack, Saganaga, Homer or the Twin Lakes. Rainbows are hitting on Trout, Leo, Kimball and Mink lakes. Lake trout can be fished at Greenwood, Saganaga, Daniels, Duncan and Gunflint lakes.

Jon added, “Good Luck withstanding our little cold spell and good fishin’ everyone!”

Trail Center Lodge is once again holding its winter fishing contest. Sarah at Trail Center encourages everyone to bring in his or her catch of the day to be measured. All legal winter species caught in inland lakes may be entered.

The contest ends March 31, 2013 and Sarah said, “The prizes will be whatever I can afford.”

To date, no fish have been entered. Check back in our next issue to see the week’s winners!
