Where are the fish biting?

Tails from the Trail columnist Cory Christianson fishes in all kinds of weather, but even he said it was probably too cold for fishing last week. However, his hardy customer Ed hung in there and was rewarded with this catch, a 30-inch walleye weighing 12.2 pounds.

This week’s report from Jon at Buck’s Hardware Hank:

How’s the fishin’ been? Depends if you’re trying to separate uranium or plutonium I guess. Bahdump bump. Otherwise, if one wants to go angling, there are plenty of alternatives.

For those who prefer to fish for walleyes, Sag seems to be a good bet. Depths range from 16 to 24 feet for some and 30 to 40 feet for others. Jigs and chubs are what we are seeing go out the door. Some smaller walleyes in Ball Club were active around 15 feet or so using chubs.

The word is Homer and Lichen were pretending to have a few active fish. I don’t get to that side of the county much but fishermen wouldn’t lie, would they? Nah.

Rainbows and splake were active on Esther last week. At least they were for me. Talk to others and they’ll probably tell you I’m blowing smoke. All I know is they were taking flies right off the shore using a casting bubble no less. Trout Lake rainbows were active in 25 feet or so.

Ernie Deschampe of Grand Portage with the huge bull moose he got while hunting with Ron Anderson and Stuart Oberg, also of Grand Portage, on Saturday, October 6. The moose’s rack measured 58 ¼ inches and it is estimated that the bull weighed 1,000 pounds. The men were hunting in the Jackson Lake area. Oberg said they spotted the massive moose about 100 feet away in a clear cut and his first thought was, “No way do I see a bull that big, no way!” Deschampe took the shot with his 30-06 rifle.

Boy it’s a good thing people check these lies I make up or I could’ve had you fishing illegally for lake trout (which ended Sept. 30. Thanks Hal!). You’d think I know this.

In other news, our moose numbers should be at 20 or so by the time this gets to print. A very nice moose came in taken by Ernie Deschampe, which had a spread of 58¼ inches. For me, the moose season is bittersweet. It’s a bummer to watch the big boys get taken, but I’ve also been the recipient of a few moose steaks from the generous people of Portage. Doggone they’re tasty. I don’t begrudge anyone hunting a tasty animal during a legal hunt.

So how good do wolves taste anyway?
