Jon at Buck’s Hardware Hank files this report:

It’s been slow up here this past week.

Walleyes have been spotty. Sag and Seagull are doing okay with jigs and minnows in 15 to 20 feet. Take some night crawlers along too.

Some were tracking decent fish on Cascade Lake in 12 to 18 feet with jigs and minnows. Also Homer Lake was giving up a couple of fish in that same range.

The bigger story this week, however, is the start of two seasons coming up this weekend, Sept. 15. Both the archery deer hunting and the grouse hunting seasons open. I’m sure there will be a ton of orange out in the field. I’ve been seeing plenty of birds out there but many seem small as if they are the second brood of chicks not quite fully grown.

Linda and Sammie Garrity of Lutsen enjoyed a day of fishing with Captain Darren Peck recently. It was Sammie’s 7th birthday and her birthday wish was to go fishing. She did and caught this huge 18-pound 37-inch lake trout.

I’ve also seen a lot of deer movement with some bucks starting to follow does. Let’s hope everyone has a successful hunt and why don’t we see if we can end a trend I’ve been observing over the past 8 to 10 years. Beer cans are strewn along roadsides at a much higher rate once the grouse season starts. Perhaps this year we can keep track of the pop and beer cans and not toss them along the roadside. It’d be great if I could track grouse season by the calendar rather than by the mass appearance of aluminum on the roads.
