What Patriotism Means To Me Abram Voss, 5th grade, Richmond, MN
What patriotism means to me is standing up for the needs of our country. Patriotism
is Martin Luther King, Jr. speaking for equal rights. It is General Eisenhower fighting for
his freedom and leading others in World War II. It is Patrick Henry shouting, “Give me
liberty or give me death!”
A patriot is someone who works for the needs of his country before his own needs. It
is Harriet Tubman leading over 300 slaves to freedom. Patriotism is all the soldiers who
fight for the freedom of their own country and also try to bring freedom to others.
This Independence Day, why don’t you show your patriotism by hanging up a flag,
or wearing our colors of red, white and blue? Go to a parade, and cheer for the fireworks!
But mostly, have a Happy Independence Day!

If you were to open up a dictionary, and look up the word “patriotism”, you would
see that it says love of one’s own country. I agree that it is the correct definition. But, you
need to read between the lines, and see what it really means.
I agree. You love one’s country. You have to look within that. How do we really love
the country? We don’t just say we love the country, but we show we love the country. Be
faithful to the country. Don’t just say how much we love it, get out and VOTE! Or watch
the news once in a while and pay attention to what is happening to the country. And
care about our veterans. Pick up trash. Support political campaigns. On Flag Day, stand
up for your flag. On Veterans Day, make a card and send it to the people in Iraq. Or, if
you know someone who was a veteran, send them a card, or give them a call. Better yet,
if you’re old enough, become a veteran! On July 4th, watch the fireworks and celebrate!
I’m sure each and every American can do the littlest things to be loyal, and love and
respect one’s country.
In short, patriotism is to love, serve, respect, and be loyal to one’s country. Everyone
probably has one definition or another, but I strongly agree with my choice. Just remember,
love, serve, be loyal, and respect the country.

If you looked up the word “patriotism” in the dictionary, you would findthe definition
“love for or devotion to one’s country”. While this is part of what patriotism is,
there is much more that goes into being a patriotic person. It is not enough to put up an
American flagin your yard and say you’re patriotic. To be truly patriotic, citizens must
speak up against their country when they disagree with something, be informed about
happenings in the world, and make sacrifices for their country.
Patriotism means standing up and voicing your opinion when you disagree with
the way the country is being run. Some people would say that it is unpatriotic to stand
up against your country, but by taking a stand, you are helping to make your country a
better place to live in.
Patriotism also means being an informed citizen. It is a citizen’s responsibility to
know all the issues facing their country and vote in elections so their country will have
responsible leaders who will serve the country well and make the country a better place.
Finally, being patriotic means making sacrifices for your country. Our soldiers in the
armed forces must leave their families and risk injury or death to protect our country
from evil, but soldiers are not the only Americans who make sacrifices. Many everyday
Americans volunteer their time to help make their country better. Also, in our current
recession, many people have made the sacrifice of spending their money to help our
economy recover.
Our nation is built upon the principles of liberty, individual freedom, and equality. It
is each citizen’s responsibility to uphold these freedoms by speaking up, being informed,
and making sacrifices for the good of our great nation.
