There will be a meeting to determine the interest for developing a local PFLAG chapter in Grand Marais on November 19 at 6 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, South Room (follow signs in narthex).
What is PFLAG? It was founded in 1973 after the simple act of a mother publicly supporting her gay son; PFLAG is the nation’s largest family and ally organization.
Mission: Our mission is to build on a foundation of loving families united with LGBTQ people and allies who support one another, and to educate ourselves and our communities to speak up as advocates until all hearts and minds respect, value and affirm LGBTQ people.
Vision: PFLAG envisions a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
What does a local chapter do?
PFLAG is a grassroots organization with a growing network of chapters in the United States. PFLAG chapters provide support, education, and advocacy to families with LGBTQ loved ones, allies, and LGBTQ people themselves. Typically, a chapter will host a monthly support group meeting and educational program, find ways to provide education on LGBTQ issues to community members, and advocate for LGBTQ equality in our society’s institutions.
