The last time I spilled West-End secrets was to clue Cook County into Jim Vick’s Singer- Songwriter free concerts at Papa Charlies (which hopefully will return as we move into a post-Covid era). Now I have a new secret to share for West- Enders (and visitors from afar) who are looking for an escape from ‘cabin-fever’ where they can watch N.F.L., Timberwolves, N.H.L. and college football games at the same time and not have to cook. For years, the Superior National Golf Clubhouse has been under-used during the winter months, despite spectacular views and a cozy fireplace and multiple H.D. televisions. With a bar serving drinks and great tap beers and the lowest priced burgers, brats, Italian sausages, pizzas, chicken fingers and various appetizers (cheese curds, onion rings, fries) in Cook County, it’s the perfect place to hang out with friends. For golfers who can’t escape with other snowbirds, there will also be an indoor computerized golf range to accommodate 4-somes who want to keep their swing going, playing multiple courses. You can come and play cribbage, backgammon, or other games (bring your own games) while having a drink, letting someone else cook and watching multiple games – what else could you want on a weekend night?
Part of sustaining our sanity when we come in from outdoor activities is being able to socialize with friends and neighbors. Starting November 12th, the clubhouse will be open Friday through Monday night for people looking for a place to play. Friday, Saturday and Monday it’s open from 4 – 9 p.m. (or until the game is over and/or the cook gets tired of those there). Sunday it’s open from 11 – 7 p.m. (or . . .). If this experiment works out it could expand to Thursday Night Football and beyond, so your support and participation is essential and cherished. Special thanks go to Scott Harrison and the board for authorizing this experiment in maximizing a county resource to meet the needs of our community.
