The filing period for all three West End townships began December 30 and remains open through 5 p.m. January 17, 2017. The last day (most) candidates can withdraw is 5 p.m. on January 17.
Each township is seeking candidates for office; most are three-year terms as supervisor and two-year terms as clerk or treasurer. All of the townships call for a $2 filing fee to apply.
In Lutsen, there are three positions up for election, a three-year term for supervisor, a one-year term for supervisor and a two-year term for treasurer.
The current Lutsen supervisors are board chair Andrew Beavers, Lynn Rose, and Rae Piepho. John Groth serves as the treasurer and Sharon Hexum-Platzer is the town clerk.
The compensation for the Lutsen Town Board is $85 per meeting. For work outside of township meetings, supervisors are paid $15 per hour, and the town clerk and treasurer are paid $20 per hour.
Lutsen meetings are the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Lutsen Town Hall at 116 Caribou Trail.
In Tofte, there are three positions open, two supervisor spots and the treasurer office.
Tofte Supervisor Paul James resigned in November and Craig Horak was appointed to fill his term until March. Horak has said that he will file to run for the one year that remained in James’ position. Supervisor board chair Jean Larson said she wouldn’t run again, leaving a three-year supervisor seat open. Sarah Somnis is the lone supervisor not up for reelection. Nancy Iverson now holds the treasurer’s two-year term.
Tofte town board members are reimbursed $75 per meeting and the treasurer, and clerks are paid $20 per hour for work outside of the monthly meetings.
Tofte board meetings are held the second Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Tofte Town Hall, 7240 Tofte Park Road.
Filing for office in Tofte takes place from January 3 to 5 p.m. on January 17, 2017. The last day for a candidate’s withdrawal is 5 p.m. on January 19, 2017. Schroeder Township supervisors meet the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Schroeder Town Hall, 124 Cramer Road.
There are two elected positions open in Schroeder. One is a three-term for supervisor, and the other is a two-year term for treasurer. Affidavits for candidacy must be filed with Schroeder Township Clerk Doug Schwecke, 74 Sunrise Drive, and Schroeder, from January 3 to January 17. Candidates can file on January 17 from 1-5 p.m. at Schroeder Town Hall.
Current supervisors are Tina McKeever, Chair, Bruce Martinson and Roger (Bill) McKeever. Alicia Kangas is the treasurer, Doug Schweke the clerk and Gale Ring is the deputy clerk.
Schroeder town board members are paid $75 for each monthly meeting and receive $10 per hour for work outside of the meetings. The clerk and the treasurer are reimbursed at a rate of $13 per hour outside of the meetings.
Township elections and annual meetings are held the second Tuesday of March. The election of officers is held the same day from 5 to 8 p.m. with the annual meeting to follow.
