The West End seniors took a bus trip to Grand Portage on July 11. We had a fantastic picnic meal and fellowship at Elderly Nutrition Services, and then toured the new Grand Portage National Monument Heritage Center and watched the new historical video. Everyone learned something new. It is a beautiful film.
We had just enough time to visit the Grand Portage State Park, and Ginny Cooley made a quick hike to High Falls while the rest enjoyed the films and artifacts in the visitor’s area. Avid Birch Grove supporter Iola Wojtysiak has some beautiful things on display. We highly recommend a visit to Grand Portage!
On July 18, Carrie McHugh from Cook County Historical Society came to the Birch Grove senior lunch to give a presentation about Laura Hogeboom Harriman, a Hovland homesteader. What an amazing woman she was!
On Tuesday, August 7, the West End Seniors are once again taking advantage of Grand Marais State Bank’s generous gift of the AEOA bus service for a trip to Finland Community Center for an afternoon about senior issues, with blood pressure screenings and a nutrition presentation. Cost is $5 for lunch. We are leaving around 10:45 from Birch Grove, and will probably have extra spaces, so plan on joining us for a fun time. There will be no Senior Lunch served at Birch Grove that day.
Barb Merritt continues to serve up delicious meals for us every Wednesday. If you are not a regular, just give us a call at 663-7977 and let us know you are coming so we are sure to have enough.
Come and see all that is going on with the 1 percent recreation projects on the Birch Grove grounds. In September we will be going on our annual fall color tour to Trestle Inn.
Sawtooth Mountain Clinic days at Birch Grove are August 8 and 31 in the afternoon. Call 387-2330 for an appointment. Please use the front entrance due to the construction.
