The Minnesota’s governor race is finally over and new legislators are preparing to take their seats this month, but election news is far from over. In fact, the three Cook County townships—Lutsen, Tofte, and Schroeder—have just opened their election filing periods. On December 28, candidates could submit application for a town board seat. The closing date for election filing is January 11, 2011.
Each township is seeking candidates for a three-year term as supervisor and a two-year term as treasurer.
In Lutsen, the current treasurer is John Groth, who has announced his intention to run for re-election. Groth has served for treasurer for seven years. The Lutsen supervisor up for re-election is Marland Hansen. Reached on the eve of the filing opening, Hansen said he hadn’t made up his mind yet whether or not he would run for re-election.
The compensation for the Lutsen Town Board is $85 per meeting. For township work outside of meetings, supervisors are paid $15 per hour and the town clerk and treasurer are paid $20 per hour.
Lutsen meetings are the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Lutsen Town Hall at 116 Caribou Trail.
The current Tofte treasurer is Mary Jane Huggins, who has served as treasurer for 2 ½ years. She said she plans to run again. Allan “DC” Olsen now holds the supervisor seat up for election. At press time, Olsen said he also intended to run. “I am planning on filing for at least one more,” he said.
Tofte town board members are reimbursed $75 per meeting and the treasurer and clerk are paid $20 per hour for work outside the monthly meetings.
The Tofte board meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Tofte Town Hall at 7240 Tofte Park Road.
Roger “Bill” McKeever currently holds the supervisor seat in Schroeder. At the last Schroeder town meeting, McKeever said he would rather not run but said he would if no one else came forward. Currently serving as Schroeder treasurer is Mary VanDoren, who said she would really like to step down. She said she hopes someone else will run for the treasurer position. However, both incumbents acknowledged that they could win on a write-in vote.
Schroeder supervisors are paid $75 for each monthly meeting and receive $10 per hour for work outside the regular meetings. The clerk and treasurer are reimbursed at a rate of $13 per hour outside meetings.
Schroeder meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Schroeder Town Hall at 24 Cramer Road.
