Welcome back snowbirds!

The recent warm weather was a welcome respite. I’m sure we are all tired of snow!

I hope the warm weather, along with the robins, is here to stay. Which brings us to talk about all of our snowbird friends. We were happy to see Stanley and Sally Suck return from a winter in Coolidge, Arizona. We look forward to seeing all of our other snowbird friends as they return home.

Every month we have been having a “Dining at the Senior Center Drawing.” The monthly winner is the lucky recipient of a gift certificate graciously donated by local businesses. On April 1, we drew for our March prize, which was a full year’s subscription to our favorite local newspaper, the Cook County News-Herald, complete with mailbox delivery – a $28.00 value! Tom Hedstrom was the lucky and excited winner.

For May the prize will be a $25 cash gift certificate from our friends at the Grand Marais State Bank. Yes, you read it correctly…that’s $25 cold, hard, cash!

The drawing will be held on Wednesday, June 1.

To be eligible to win, all you have to do is stop in for lunch. With each lunch you will receive one entry ticket. Eat more often…win more often!

On Tuesday May 10, we will be having a special luncheon in honor of “National Older Americans.” On the menu is orange glazed chicken, baby red potatoes, tropical fruit, pasta salad, dinner roll and dessert. Mark your calendars and bring a date or a friend!

Building improvements continue here at the Senior Center. We are currently having the roof replaced. We lost many shingles in the past few windstorms. We will also be having a new garage door installed. These improvements are very expensive. Please remember your friends here at the Senior Center when it comes time to open your hearts and checkbooks to make donations.

On Wednesday, May 11, our Senior Center bus will be traveling up to Grand Portage for our monthly trip of fun and hopefully luck. The cost for round trip transportation is $11. Everyone of all ages is welcome to join us. Reserve your spot by signing up at or calling the Senior Center at 387-2660.

On Tuesday, May 24, we will be joining some Canadians for an exciting two-night, threeday trip to Hinckley Grand Casino. The trip includes: roundtrip luxury bus transportation, 2 night accommodations, 2 continental breakfasts, $95 free Grand Casino play, a $12-off coupon for the Grand Buffet and 24-hour free transportation between the casino and hotel. The cost is $174 per person based on double occupancy. Registration and prepayment deadline is 4:00 May 9. We hope you can join us!

On Thursdays at 9:45 a.m., join us for cribbage, and after lunch, bingo! The cost for bingo is $1 for the entire session. We have prizes such as treats to eat, a chance to win the pot, which is currently at $7. There is also a daily grand prize, which can include your choice of gift certificates donated by local businesses or a senior center lunch ticket.

Remember, the Senior Center is open and welcoming to all of all ages!
