When people think of poetry, they often think of old-timey love poems and pretty rhymes about flowers. There are certainly many beautiful poems of this variety. But, contemporary poetry also has a wild and crazy side, a rock-and-roll and hip-hop side, and an exciting workshop Nov. 2 will explore that side. This workshop will explore those weirder branches of modern poetry’s practice and craft.
The Grand Marais Public Library will present Brian Laidlaw’s Weird Poetry, a free poetry and music program at 1 p.m. Nov. 2.
Laidlaw is a poet, songwriter and educator from San Francisco, currently living in Minneapolis. He studied creative writing as an undergraduate at Stanford University, where he first began setting his poems to music. He has also recently released a collection of poetry entitled The Stuntman.
Laidlaw will take the audience through examples of contemporary poetry, see how music changes the poem and help participants start creating their own masterpieces. High school age and adult poets will enjoy this exploration of poetry and music twisting together to create rock and roll and hip hop music!
