On June 2, 2010 fourteen Weight Watchers members participated in the second annual walk-it challenge. This challenge began the week of April 4, 2010. For six weeks, Weight Watchers offered members a step-by-step training guide to build their walking endurance to be able to walk a 5k, or 3.1 miles, by June 6.
Denise Murray and Marsha Zafft marked the distance. The route began at the hospital and ended there; the inbetween miles covered the new Gunflint Trail past the Law Enforcement Center out to Bautch Construction and back toward town past Johnson’s Foods and zigzagged the streets back to the hospital parking lot.
The objective of the walk was to encourage members to move more. Having a goal to aim for makes it more fun. On a bright and sunny early evening, it was just that.
“Moving more” is 25% of the Weight Watcher Program. Members know that by incorporating daily activity into their lifestyle they will be able to take off unwanted pounds more quickly or maintain lifetime weight loss status and improve overall health and wellbeing.
Members didn’t stop there. As an added incentive, members brought food items totalling 73.4 pounds to be donated to the Cook County Food Shelf. The donations correlated with pounds lost while on the Weight Watchers program. Gwen Lenz, a volunteer for the Food Shelf, picked up the donations before the walk.
If you are interested in learning more about the Weight Watchers Program, you are invited to sit in on a meeting for free. If you like what you see and hear, then come join the group. Meetings are in the lower level of the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic on Wednesday evenings; weigh-ins begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by a 30 minute meeting at 5 p.m. Attending meetings regularly is another key ingredient to successful weight loss and healthy weight maintenance. Members gain valuable advice as they listen to others share their successes and challenges on their road to a healthier lifestyle.
